In this day and age, we offer a degree in ethics, we have institutions and companies dedicated to teaching companies and employees how to be ethical, right from wrong, good from bad. As parents we try to instill in our children this same philosophy, we preach that America follows the "golden rule" however we don't require the same from our politicians.
Regardless of who you vote for on Election Day, what this election has done is divide a nation. Some will blame Obama, others McCain, but at time when we need to pull together and work as one, we are more divided than ever.
Quite honestly, I have always considered myself neutral, I have voted for Republicans and Democrats alike, but I always vote my conscience. My values are fairly grounded, I believe in abortion rights for women, gay marriage and lobbyist reform, while I oppose the current state of our welfare system, restrictions on businesses and instilling a national healthcare plan paid for by tax payers, so you see I am usually in a quandary with who to vote for during an election year.
This year, I am disgusted to be associated with either party, using the "C" word or "N" word, is embarrassing. Quite honestly a party that condones using race as an issue, or sex as an issue, in the year 2008 is almost inexplicable. We are still allowing age-old problems to dictate how we view our political office. I am disappointed we are allowing ignorant rednecks to use race, or gender, as a tool to try to win. If we as a society are not smart enough to win an election based on what is best for America, by using knowledge, experience and leadership as a guidpost to what is acceptable, well it is beyond me, how they can be fit to hold office.
Imagine it this way… most of you have jobs (unless like me you have been recently laid off due to the sour economy), say the CEO of the company you work for, is struggling to maintain his position, or actually filling a vacant spot in the executive ranks. What if he began using race, or gender to divide the company, promoting only policies that aid the top executives, who are by all standards your typical white male, they give preferential treatment to business partners, who are already wealthy, while eliminating opportunities for small business, women and minorities, because he holds the power to do so. You would be pretty disenchanted wouldn't you? You would demand change, or look for another job, or try to get the rank in file to have him removed, but in my current estimation that is what our party system and politicians have done to our country, starting with the President.
We scream and curse when it happens with the exec's at AIG, or Lehman Brothers, or any other Fortune 500 company, so why the hell are we tolerating it with our politicians? Why are we not holding them to the highest standard and making them accountable for their actions? Smear tactics and slanderous accusations by both parties is despicable at best and not necessary, the stupidity and waste of money on negative ads, that many Americans are tired of hearing, we want facts, we want to know how our lives will be improved and how the hell we are going to get ourselves out of this mess, not he said she said.
There is little consolation that the end is near, that the elections will quiet this storm that is raining pieces of hail so large that it is putting dents the size of basketballs on many of our houses and our heads, we want answers, we want resolve and we want the name calling and childish bickering to stop, this isn't high school, this isn't junior high and it certainly isn't kindergarten, our politicians need to grow up and make the most of the opportunity to serve the people who put them in office, they need to be leaders, leading by example, walking the walk, not talking the talk.
